Bulandra Theater on Romanian Pavilion stage at EXPO 2010

For the first time visitors at Romania’s Pavilion at EXPO 2010 can see the play “The Line, Where is the City Going?” by the actors of the Bucharest Bulandra Theater. This is a theater&dance play, on the general topic of the Exhibition – “Better City, Better Life” – and was written especially for Romania's participation in the World Exhibition. The public can see the performance in the afternoons, between September 30th and October 10th, 2010.

The play intends to show the interaction between people, the environment and the architectural space. It is a 30-minute non-verbal show depicting thoughts about the contrasts of the contemporary city, and is the result of a cooperation between director Alexandru Darie, song-writer Adrian Enescu, stage director Octavian Neculai, and Oana Turbatu for the script, Cosmin Manolescu for the choreography, and Iustin Românescu for image and editing.

“Performing on the stage of Romania’s Pavilion at EXPO 2010 is an extraordinary experience. Working with the Bulandra Theater I’ve done two other shows with Japanese actors in Tokyo and also gave performances in Malaysia. I might say I have become somewhat familiar with the Asian audiences, but I hadn’t had the experience of a Chinese audience. I hope we get very good feedback”, director Alexandru Darie said.

The tumult of modern life is represented through a mix of original music, sound effects, and choreography that create multiform spaces. Those effects are supported by multimedia projections which render the alert pace of life in the urban environment.

To complete the cultural program, in the same period the Pavilion’s facilities also venue the “Play Space” exhibition by architect Adrian Neculai. Together with students from the Bucharest University of Architecture and Urbanism “Ion Mincu,” visitors can customize wooden cubes and create various geometrical shapes.

“I was hoping the exhibition would be a success, but I never expected this type of interaction to work so well with both children and older people. The visitors immediately realized they were getting personally involved in the exhibition and enjoyed it”, architect Adrian Neculai said.

So far the visiting public has left numerous messages on the wooden cubes with the exhibition space. After they draw their message on the cube and add it to an existing construction, they can keep another cube with the message that represents them best.
